What are General Skilled Visas Australia?
General Skilled Migration (GSM) comprises a large stream of permanent migration to Australia. It is designed to attract highly skilled, younger applicants with good English ability and work experience in desired occupations. The most common GSM visa was the 457 “Temporary Work Visa” and in March 2018 Government replaced the 457 visa new 482 TSS visa

Sponsored or Nominated Skilled Visas Australia
Usually (but not always) GSM applicants are employer sponsored applicants. GSM is also the visa pathway for students who have recently completed their Australian studies. You can always make an Independent (un-sponsored) application using the ‘SkillSelect’ pathway. Selection is via a comprehensive points test and normally favours those with skills that are in high demand in Australia at the time of application. The information here is of most relevance to those applicants who have a sponsor.
General Skilled Migration (GSM) requires all applicants to meet certain basic or ‘threshold’ criteria:
- Obtain a positive skills assessment in a nominated occupation on the appropriate Skilled Occupations List
- Age, in general, the main applicants must be aged between 18 or over and less than 45
- English language ability, most applicants need to sit for formal English language testing
- In certain cases completion of one or more suitable qualifications after at least two years of study in Australia
A number of GSM subclasses also require the applicant to meet the applicable pass mark in the GSM points test, and for this reason GSM visas are often referred to as ‘points tested’ visas.
There are currently nine GSM subclasses, for which a person may apply, falling within six classes.

SkillSelect for Skilled Visas Australia
SkillSelect is an online service that enables skilled persons who are interested in obtaining an Australian visa to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI).
It is a three stage process-
- Expression of Interest.
- Invitation to apply.
- Application lodged and assessed.
Expression of Interest threshold criteria at time of Lodgement:
- Age less than 45 years old
- Nominated occupation must be in the Occupation List for the specific visa
- Positive Skill Assessment
- Competent English
