On 1 July 2017, the New Zealand 189 pathway became a stream within the Skilled Migration visa (the 189). This PR visa is for New Zealanders currently living in Australia on the 444 (and includes non-NZ family on the 461) visa and who were usually resident in Australia before 20 February 2016 and who have resided in Australia for at least five years. This a great way for Kiwi’s to secure permanent residence status. Other required criteria are; income tax returns for four years at least equivalent to the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold for the qualifying period. You must also meet other requirements such as health, character and security checks.
And, NZ citizens who are granted this visa can apply for Australian citizenship after a further of 12 months in addition to five years of residency on a 444 visa.
As this is a Permanent Residency Visa the application process and requirements are far more complex than the temporary SCV/444 visa. Failure to meet all of the criteria for the visa can result in a Refusal and loss of the Visa Application Charge (VAC).
